Article I: Time and Place of Meetings

Meetings will be from 3:35 to 4:00 in the BHS cafeteria, unless otherwise stated, on the first Wednesday of every month. Regular meetings shall be held on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month.  Special meetings may be called by the President after consultation with and the approval of the Executive Committee and the faculty sponsor of the club. The public may be invited to attend any regular or special meeting of this organization. Monthly meetings are a requirement. Any other committee meetings are not required, but can replace future missed meetings. Students may only miss 1 monthly meeting per semester. (This does not include the committee meetings).

Articles II: Quorum

A quorum of this organization shall be constituted by a majority of the membership. No action may be taken which is binding upon the membership unless a quorum is present. However, certain matters—such as a discussion of means of taking in new members, the presentation of a program, etc.—may be carried on at a regular or special meeting without a quorum being present.

Article III: Standard of Membership (Requirements)

Students must hold a 90 average or higher overall grade point average to be invited and maintain an 85 GPA thereafter, have good attendance (as per the BHS handbook), and good behavior (no more than 3 minor offenses as decided by sponsor(s)) at the time the list is pulled at the beginning of each semester in order to be invited. BETA is by invitation only. Standards of membership include the following:

  • General features as laid down in the national constitution
  • Must pay membership dues on time
  • Must be in grades 9th(spring semester) through 12th
  • Maintain a 85.0 overall average (90 upon invitation)
  • Maintain good behavior(no more than 3 minor offenses; exceptions may be decided by sponsor(s) discretion) and good attendance(as per the BHS handbook)
  • Attend required monthly meetings (1st Wednesday of each month in room 1516)
  • Attend Induction Ceremony, including wearing proper attire and respectful behavior
  • Complete service project each semester (1st Semester: Santa Workshop, 2nd semester: Relay for Life)

  • Must be an ACTIVE member (attending all required functions, attend most group functions, participating in meetings, and being a doer)
  • Sell at least 10 Beef sticks per semester

All members must pay their dues ON TIME, complete ten service hours per semester, actively participate in every service project, and miss no more than one monthly meeting per semester. These are required of each BETA member.

Members are responsible for the membership requirements listed in Article II and for fulfilling their own probation requirements listed in Article IV. Probation is non-negotiable and irrevocable. Parent behavior may revoke the membership of their son/daughter. If the sponsor(s) or officers determine a parent is hostile towards the members or sponsors, the membership of their child will result in automatic termination.

***As of January 2018, freshman will be included in the invitation process for BETA. Freshman who hold a 90.0 GPA, NO behavior issues, and NO attendance issues will be invited to be inducted into BHS Beta Club.

Article IV: Induction of Members

The induction of new members into the membership of this chapter of National Senior Beta shall be one of dignity appropriate to the ideals of the organization. All BETA members are required to attend the induction ceremony for all new inductees on the scheduled date decided by the BETA officers. All inductees are required to attend. If, for some reason, an emergency comes up to prevent you from attending go immediately to Mrs. Hickey. Mrs. Hickey will determine an alternative replacement if she deems it necessary. Members and inductees should wear professional attire/”church” attire: NO jeans, NO tank tops, NO shorts, and must be in school dress code. If a member/inductee is not dressed appropriately, he/she will be sent away without receiving credit. All members should remain silent and respectful until the creed is recited. If behavior exhibited by a member or inductee is found to be inappropriate or unbecoming of a member, he/she will be asked to leave and the member will not receive credit for attending. The point of this ceremony is to welcome new members in and should be held with high respect for the new inductee and his/her families.

Article V: Loss of Membership

A member of this chapter of National Senior Beta will be placed on probation if he/she:

> is absent without a justifiable reason (doctor’s note/parent signed note) from NO more than 1 required monthly meeting per semester.

> falls below 85.0 overall scholastic average (this will be checked at the beginning of each semester).

> has more than three minor offenses as decided by sponsors, or an offense sponsors feel are     unbecoming of a BETA member, acquired per year.

> does not complete at least 10 service hours each semester and submit them by the deadline announced.

> becomes an attendance issue (within guidelines of BHS: this includes, but is not limited to, tardies and absences).

> does not complete the required service project per semester.

> does not attend induction ceremony(s)

>does not sell 10 beef sticks per semester

>becomes inactive after 1 semester will result in automatic dismissal not probation (1 or less meetings, no service project, no ceremony, no service hours).

Members will be notified by letter with the explanation of why they have been placed on probation at the beginning of the following semester. If after probation (lasting one semester), the member has not fulfilled the requirements of membership satisfactorily, the member will be dismissed from the club. If and when a member is dropped from membership, a record of this action shall be relayed to the national office of National Senior Beta immediately. In the event of the loss of membership (with exception of GPA), dismissed members will not be invited back for the rest of their entire high school career.

***Social Media: Members who are excused or given an alternative for a required event, but are found on social media suggesting otherwise will result in automatic termination.

Not fulfilling probation by deadline will result in loss of membership and prevent that member from being re-invited thereafter.

Article VI: Local Dues and Assessments

The local dues of this chapter of National Senior Beta shall be $25 per year for NEW members, and $20 for returning members. Assessments (may/may not) be made upon the membership to defray the costs of special undertakings. If you do not pay dues by the deadline each semester, the student will automatically be dropped as a member.

Article VII: Amending the Constitution

The by-laws of this chapter of National Senior Beta may be amended once a year by the officers and sponsor.
