9/21-10/1- Game Time Close Up in Google Classroom

9/21-10/1- Game Time Close Up

Today we are going to begin a different still life project. A close up of a game or game pieces. Think about what game is your favorite game. What is the game of your life? If you chose a video game, I want you to create a still life of the game container, the game controller and some objects(gamer decor). This time around, I am setting the restriction of acrylic paint as the medium, and I want it to be large format on watercolor paper.
Here are some examples from several different artists know for their close ups of nostalgic games and toys. The first 3 are by Kathy Hildebrandt. The candy and marble are by Sarah Graham, and the last 3 are by Glennray Tutor. All are photo realistic. Yours doesn't have to be completely photo realistic, but I do want it to be to scale and colorful.
Today I need you to consider your composition. What objects do you want in your game still life? You can use photographs for reference, but the piece should look like a grouping of objects in real life.
Make some thumbnails sketches of ideas and post them to artsonia. The completed work will be due on Friday.

Due:

9/16-9/17 Getting It Done in Google Classroom

9/16-9/17 Getting It Done

I need for each of you to spend the next two days to complete as much of the work that you have missed over the last two weeks. I have a few of you who are right where you need to be, but most of you are behind.
If you are all caught up. Use this opportunity to review and revise something that you already did. One of the things artists do is to revisit to improve. You can also work on some journal pages and/or artist research pages in your sketchbooks.
It has come to my attention that some folks think I am being too hard on you, but the only thing different in this class from previous classes is the level of rigor. I need everyone to step up. If you are in an advanced class, you are expected to push yourself to a higher standard. One of the main things involved in that is to persevere.

Due:

9/13 It's In Your Hands continued in Google Classroom

9/13 It's In Your Hands continued

You have had multiple days to produce this composition, and I would like you to share your progress today. We will be having a formal critique today. I will be giving a participation grade for this.

The criteria for that image are:
-the image includes at least one realistically drawn hand
-the image includes a background that helps tell the story
-the image fills the space on the page
-some part of the image must break the picture plane
-the image must look like it took several hours to complete.

Your image could be just a drawing, or it could be painted or colored. It is your composition. It should reflect your art style and personality.
I have included some tutorials on drawing hands, some helpful websites, and some famous or inspirational hand art below.

Most of our projects while doing virtual have been daily projects only worth 20 points each. In fact the studies of hands, and the thumbnail sketches will both count 20 point each. This will be an actual project worth 100 points.

Due:

9/8-9/10 It's In Your Hands in Google Classroom

9/8-9/10 It's In Your Hands

Today I want to start a lesson on drawing hands. I would like you to use most of today to sketch your hands, or look at tutorials on how to draw hands. Post those sketches to Artsonia at the end of class today. After you feel fairly confident in your skills, I need you to consider a composition that includes at least one realistically drawn hand. Draw some ideas as thumbnails in your sketchbook, and then chose one to create an artwork from. You will have until Friday to produce this artwork.

9/7 Carboard Art completion in Google Classroom

9/7 Carboard Art completion

Since you are all at home, I would like you to try a little experimentation with unconventional materials. Most folks will have some kind of cardboard just hanging around. It might be a cereal box, or a box that something was packaged or delivered in. Whatever kind of cardboard you can find, is acceptable. I don't know what kind of art materials most of you might have at home, but this is a time for experimentation and thinking a little "outside the box" -pun intended. I have included a link to a website that shows you how to create homemade glue in case you don't have any at the house and can't acquire any. Also it is just fun.
You can choose to create something in 2D or 3D. I am going to give you until Tuesday at the end of class to complete this one. Have fun! Be Creative!
I have included some examples below. If you search Youtube with "using cardboard to create art" you will find lots of other resources too.
The class video recording is at the bottom of all the attachments.

9/1 Close Up of your Flat Lay in Google Classroom

9/1 Close Up of your Flat Lay

Today we are going to create a viewfinder and use it to choose a section of your Flat Lay project from yesterday to create a larger version of a detail. I have included a tutorial. If you can print a copy of your Flat Lay photograph, that would be great, but you can also do this with your computer and your viewfinder. You can hold up your viewfinder in front of the image on the screen and take a photo with your phone, or you can simply make a copy of your original photo and crop it to only show a small portion of the image. Either way, I would like to see a full page enlargement of a detail from your Flat Lay project uploaded to artsonia.

Due:

8/30 Value/Shading Fabric Folds in Google Classroom

8/30 Value/Shading Fabric Folds

We are going to continue our study of value and practicing drawing skills with pencil (something most of you have at home).
There is a tutorial below for your to watch and get the general idea. You will be working on this today only, and turn in a photo of your drawing on Artsonia. I need you to use the photo I am sending you, do not use fabric you have a home, unless you want to try it a second time for practice. It should be somewhat easier because I have already changed the image to black and white so you can see the values and the texture.
Lastly, if you were not able to get on the google meet. Here is a recording of the instructional portion.

Due:

8/23 Still Life in a Box in Google Classroom

8/23 Still Life in a Box

We are going to create a drawing of a box with a small still life of some objects that are meaningful to you. The main objectives in this lesson are:
To see objects and draw them accurately
To show 3d space
To be able to render values without color
and To translate 3d objects onto a 2d space and enlarging those objects to fill the page.

First I need you to practice drawing a three dimensional box in your sketchbook to review how perspective works. I have included two videos below to remind you how to draw boxes, or perspective. I have also included my VERY old example drawing.

Due:

Uploading Art to Artsonia in Google Classroom

Uploading Art to Artsonia

Artsonia is the location of your electronic portfolios. I do need your parents to login and create an account, but you are still able to upload artwork even if they haven't done so yet. During class and especially during virtual learning, I will need you to be able to photograph and upload your artwork to the website. I am posting the link to the Class Portal so you can access it directly. I am also posting a link to a video showing how to find your class (VA Comp 1- 3rd or 4th block) and upload artwork to projects. Our access code is -

RBSZ-SKFK
Note- when accessing artsonia through the website artsonia.com in the video it has a button that says student, but it now says artist.
I have included a video on how to use a chromebook to take photos of your artwork as well.
You DO NOT need to upload your artwork to the Google classroom, only to Artsonia.

Due:

8/19-8/20 Critique in Google Classroom

8/19-8/20 Critique

We will have a critique at 10:45. If you are not in the classroom, but still want to get credit.

Tomorrow you will need to bring a small box with a few objects in it that somehow tell a little bit about you.

Due:

Day 4- Create Artwork in Google Classroom

Day 4- Create Artwork

For today and the next couple of days, I need you to create an artwork based off of one of the branches of the second mind map you created. We will finish these and have a critique on Tuesday the 17th.
You will need to make a thumbnail sketch and write down some ideas on the process for this piece in your sketchbook. Examples are below.

Due:

Days 2 and 3 in Google Classroom

Days 2 and 3

We will be working on 2 Mind Maps for these two days. The first one should be with you(identity) in the center, and the second one should be of one or more of the branches from the identity mind map. Breaking it into smaller ideas that you can create art from.
If you are not familiar with mind mapping this interview with the inventor of mind mapping might help you better understand it.
I have also included some examples of mind maps for you to look at.
There aren't a lot of rules that you need to follow, but there are a few basic things to remember.
1. Try not to draw lines to straight
2. You need to include color
3. You need to include images, drawings and doodles
4. Try not to write more than one to two words per branch.
We will base our first artwork in class on the second mind map.
