Introduction/Connection:
Taking the skills we learned from the short story unit, we are going to use them to analyze a longer piece of literature. This is an EPISTOLARY novel written about a poor black woman in rural Georgia. Discuss being mature with subject matter.

Review direct/indirect characterization
Review tone & mood.
Review imagery

Together, listening & reading we pick out words and phrases to determine the mood and tone.
We pick out examples of direct and indirect characterization.

Students answer comprehension questions about the text.
