Standard(s):

2.1 Types of Chemical Bonds

SAP 2A.4: The difference in electronegativity is not the only factor in determining if a bond should be designated as ionic or covalent. Generally, bonds between a metal and nonmetal are ionic, and bonds between two nonmetals are covalent. Examination of the properties of a compound is the best way to characterize the type of bonding.

Learning Target:

I can learn about writing empirical formulas and molecular formulas for compounds.

I can look at electronegativity and bond polarity to help determine types of bonds and interactions between atoms and molecules.

Success Criteria:

I can learn about chemical bonding, naming of compounds and molecules, and writing their formulas.

I can learn how the trend of electronegativity on the Periodic Table plays a role in determining the types of bonds and bond polarity.

Gradual Release Model of Instruction: I Do, We Do, You Do, We Check

Opening (I do):

Work Session (explain clearly the We Do and You Do portions):

     We Do:

  1. Review empirical formulas and molecular formulas from Honors/Gifted Chemistry last year.
  2. Practice doing some problems together (independently or with a partner).

     You Do:

  1. Start taking notes on bonding from Chapter 8 PowerPoint working independently (going at your own pace). Get notes from Slides 1-22, skip 23-27, then 28-34...stop at 34!)
  2. Watch EdPuzzle link from Khan Academy on "Electronegativity and Bonding."
  3. Go over FRQs from Tuesday's test.

Closing (We Check):

  1. Continue working on your Lab write-up and your textbook problems!!

Differentiation Strategies:

Individual work today with notes from the teacher and the PowerPoint.

Partner work on the worksheet practice.

Formative/Summative

Assessment(s): (We Check)

Completing the worksheet is formative.

Completing the book problems, lab write-up, and future unit test will be summative.

Assignment(s):

  1. Start working on completion of your second lab write-up. (Try to be done by Labor Day!)
  2. Start Unit #2 ECQs out of the textbook.
  3. Unit #2 Test will be on Monday, September 14th.
