hat: Rhetorical Mini-Project (3 Days)
When:3/10-3/12
ELAGSE9-10RI2: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
ELAGSE9-10RI3: Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed, and the connections that are drawn between them.
ELAGSE9-10RI5: Analyze in detail how an author's ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text (e.g., a section or chapter). ELAGSE9-10RI6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.
ELAGSE9-10RI7: Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person's life story in print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account.
ELAGSE9-10RI8: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning.
ELAGSE9-10W9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research b. Apply grades 9–10 Reading standards to literary nonfiction (e.g., “Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning”)

Success Criteria:

I can identify a partner’s use of rhetorical devices.
Introduction/Connection:
Are documentaries the only media that uses ethos, logos, and pathos? Turn and talk with a partner.
DIRECT INSTRUCTION:
Review Rhetorical Devices
Find examples in different advertisements.
Go over Min-project. Directions included below:
Create Your OWN Advertisement--MINI Project
Options:
(1) You may create a script for a TV/Radio commercial
(2) Create a poster sized advertisement.
Commercials: If you choose this you must make 1 for TV & 1 for RADIO
You must write a full 200 word script about your product. It MUST include a full description of the product, the COMPANY name and the price tag.
You may also include music.as part of your persuasion
You must describe what the set would look like for TV or explain the sound effects used for Radio. The person reading the script must be able to visualize how it would look & sound.
It must last for a minimum of one minute if read out loud
YOU MUST USE ETHOS, PATHOS & LOGOS
You must create at least two ads--1 for TV, 1 for RADIO.
You will explain HOW you used ETHOS, PATHOS, & LOGOS in your own advertisement and turn it in with your scripts.
The advertisements and analysis should be free of grammatical errors.
Billboard/POSTER Advertisement: IF you are not artistic, this is NOT YOUR OPTION.
Create an advertisement on a poster. I have the poster board. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY ONE.
Your advertisement should be professionally presented, have an original appearance, design, and be completely colored.
You must include visuals as well as print in your advertisement.
Your advertisement should clearly demonstrate at least TWO of the rhetorical strategies (ETHOS, PATHOS, LOGOS)
You will explain HOW you used ETHOS, PATHOS, & LOGOS in your own advertisement and turn it in with your poster.
The advertisement and analysis should be free of grammatical errors.

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations. Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.
