Opening (I Do)
An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

Standards:
ELAGSE9-10SL2: Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source.
ELAGSE9-10RI1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
ELAGSE9-10W10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Learning Target:
I can analyze editorial cartoons.
Success Criterias:
I can write a bulleted list of characteristics of observations of what I see in the cartoon.
I can make inference about what the observations may mean.
I can explain why the artist created the cartoon, who they created it for and what truth they wanted to convey.
Introduction/Connection:
What are editorial cartoons? Why are they created/used?
DIRECT INSTRUCTION:
How do we analyze a cartoon? How is it different from working with a text? The teacher models the practice verbally.

Students learn by doing/demonstrating learning expectations. Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

GUIDED PRACTICE:
We will analyze the first 2 cartoons together.
INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:
Students will analyze a series of cartoons with a partner.
Students will then explain what each cartoon means and its purpose.
Closing (We Check)
Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding .
