Opening (I Do)
An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

ELAGSE9-10RI1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
ELAGSE9-10RI2: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
Success Criterias:
I can determine the claim in a visual text.
I can explain how the author supported their claim.
I can analyze the quality of the claim and evidence.
Introduction/Connection:

Can images manipulate an audience? Can it do it as effectively as text? Why/why not?


DIRECT INSTRUCTION:
Review what a claim is.

Using the Google Slide labeled persuasive images talk about how images can be used to argue.

As a class read the look at the introductory video https://www.statnews.com/2018/02/05/aging-japan-robots-virtual-reality/

Together we break down the argument and how the author makes her claim. Where did she succeed? Where did she fail?



Work Period (We Do, You Do)
Students learn by doing/demonstrating learning expectations. Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

GUIDED PRACTICE:
Together we create a constructed analysis paragraph that addresses the claim being made and the evidence given.
INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:
Students will break into pairs and choose one of the two videos to watch with their partner. The pair writes a second analysis paragraph addressing the original claim. Did they answer the original claim?
Closing (We Check)
Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding .

SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:
Teacher and students will discuss whether or not the task was difficult, the purpose and what we plan to do to make ourselves successful.
