Opening (I Do)

An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

TKES 1, 2, 3,4,5, 8,10

Standard/s:

MGSE9-12.A.REI.5 Algebra 1 Standards – Eliminating Systems of Equations

Learning Target:

I will solve systems of equations by elimination.

Success Criteria:

  • I can identify the least common multiple.
  • I can combine like terms.
  • I can remember and understand the MAD acronym.
  • I can identify the solution
    • One solution – (x, y)
    • No solutions – variables cancel out (false statement)
    • Infinitely many solution – variables cancel out (true statement)

Introduction/Connection:

Pirate Prep

Review the prior two ways to solve systems. Ask if anyone recalls the third way they were taught in middle school.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:

Notes in flip chart folder. Compare solution found when graphing and substituting systems and notice that the answer is the same for eliminating systems. Students will notice that all answers are the same.

Work Period  (We Do, You Do)

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. 8,10

GUIDED PRACTICE:

Complete examples Elimination Day 1 (basics) worksheet

INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:

Students will finish their workbook page.

Closing  (We Check)

Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding .

TKES : 1,2,3, 4,5,6,7,8

SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:
