a. Analyze the origins of Islam and the growth of the Islamic Empire.

b. Understand the reasons for the split between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims.

c. Assess the economic impact of Muslim trade routes to India, China, Europe and Africa.

d. Identify the contributions of Islamic scholars in science, math, and geography

I can identify the basic beliefs of the Islamic faith.

Introduction/Activator:

  • Pirate Prep

  • Flocabulary video, “Islamic World,” and accompanying quiz (We Do)

    • Students will watch the video and use it to answer the “quiz” corrections. Students will swap papers and peer-assess as we go over the answers.


Lesson:

  1. Notes on the Islamic World (I Do)

  2. Islamic achievements DBQ (We Do/You Do)

    1. Students will evaluate 5 documents to see how early Islamic achievements contributed to the western world’s knowledge and to compare the Islamic world to Europe. 


Summarizer: informal class discussion over success criteria

  • Graphic organizer-style notes
