Resources Used

Introduction/Activator:

  • Pirate Prep: review video of the Middle Ages *daily grade

    • Review includes fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions. Questions will be randomly assigned to students so that they can focus more on the video.

  • Lesson Hook: The True Story of the Three Little Pigs

    • Students will write down “facts” they remember from the traditional story of the 3 little pigs (characters, setting, sequence of events)

    • Teacher will read book; students will then consider how the story matches their understanding of the 3 little pigs

    • Discussion: how does the concept of multiple perspectives affect the way we view events? How do we know what is “true” or not? How does this apply to history?

Lesson:

  1. Crusades video + questions (We Do)

    1. Students will watch a 5 minute video that gives an overview of the Crusades. As they watch the video, they will complete 10 questions. We will go over these questions together.

  2. Timeline annotation (I Do/We Do/You Do)

    1. Together, we will examine a timeline that details the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of Islam. Teacher will model how to annotate a timeline, and we will answer accompanying questions together as a class (scaffolding).

    2. Students will then annotate an additional timeline that details the breakdown in relationship between Christians and Muslims that led to the Crusades. They will use this information to answer 2 accompanying questions.

      1. Flexible grouping- Students may work independently or in pairs to complete

  3. Crusades NewsELA article with questions (You Do) *daily grade

    1. Reading will be posted on Google Classroom and differentiated by Lexile level
