Standard(s): 

  • ELAGSE9-10W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above.) 

  • ELAGSE9-10W5: Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1–3 up to and including grades 9–10.)

  •  ELAGSE9-10W6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technology’s capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamicallyindependence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression

Activities & Assignments

PP: Latin Root


The instructor will share a prompt asking students to create a review of the white house poetry slam. The instructor will then introduce a few new videos of the poetry jam for students to take notes to. Videos will be presented on Google Classroom. 


The instructor will lead a discussion on news publication styles. We will discuss what exactly a review of the poetry jam will look like and brainstorm publication names and strategies. 


Students will then be tasked with creating their own publications reviewing several performances of the jam. This will be a multi day project and evaluated for both its writing and its presentation!
