ELAGSE9-10L: Language

  • ELAGSE9-10L.VA: Vocabulary Acquisition and Use

    • ELAGSE9-10L4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grades 9-10 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

      • ELAGSE9-10L4.c: Consult general and specialized reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning, its part of speech, or its etymology.

    • ELAGSE9-10L6: Acquire and use accurately general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

  • ELAGSE9-10RI.RR: Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity

    • ELAGSE9-10RI10: By the end of grade 9, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 9-10 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
      By the end of grade 10, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 9-10 text complexity band independently and proficiently.




Learning Target:

  1. Read closely and analyze an article about information analysis


Success Criteria:

  1. Students will create annotated texts with detailed notes regarding their impressions on accuracy on the web

  2. Students will make a list of false news stories they have encountered in their lives for discussion. We will pick the most obviously untrue for a prize. 



Activities & Assignments

Latin Root


Students will begin with a short discussion on information inaccuracy. We will collectively make a list of the most inaccurate news stories we have ever encountered. Students will be allowed to do on the spot research and search for inaccurate news through the last few years. 


After a brief discussion and a prize for worst news story, we will begin the achieve article for the day. Students will write summaries then complete the article. Time will be allowed for Magazine work if needed.
