Course/ Subject/Unit: Pre Ap Literature/Composition

Date of Instruction: 04/19/23


ELAGSE9-10RL2: Determine a theme and/or central idea of text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.


ELAGSE9-10RL3: Analyze how complex characters(e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.


ELAGSE9-10RL6: Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature.




Learning Target:

  1. Experience a story from ancient europe and connect it to our experiences today. 

  2. Identify the desires and motivations of characters.


Success Criteria:


  1. Take developed notes during a “Story Time with Mr. Bailey.”

  2. Participate in an academic discussion on the tale of the Green Knight. 

  3. Draw a scene from the story as if you were illustrating a book on the subject in groups. 


Activities & Assignments

Discovering Voice “music from the past.” 


Opening discussion: What is honor? What is Chivalry? What does it mean to become a man or to grow up? 


Story time with Mr. Bailey. Students will take notes looking for the overall themes of the story and trying to answer the question. Why is this still popular even today? 


Students will then form small groups to illustrate a moment from the story. They will present their illustrations and explain why they chose this moment, its significance to the story and even what they hope their image conveys. 


Class will end with a selection of best illustration for a prize.
