ELAGSE9-10RI5: Analyze in detail how an author’sideas or claims are developed and refined by particularsentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text (e.g., a section or chapter).


ELAGSE9-10RI4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language of a court opinion differs from that of a newspaper).


ELAGSE9-10RI6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose

Success Criteria:

  1. Creating Descriptive outlines

  2. Students will exercise paraphrasing

  3. Students will write analytical paragraphs



Activities & Assignments

Latin Root


Opening prompt. Read  the first paragraph of “The Decline of the American Teenagers Summer Job” and decide whether or not we agree or disagree. What is our stance on Ronald Reagan and do we agree with how much the author respects him? 


We will return to the descriptive outline format of what the article SAYS and DOES. The instructor will remind students of what these terms mean and how they should be used. 


When the outline is finished, the rest of the class will be devoted to Magazine work.
