Teacher : Maura Anderson

Course/ Subject/Unit:

Algebra 2

Unit 1

Topic: Solving Exponential Equations

Date of Instruction:

Standard(s):

MGSE9-12.F.BF.5 Understand the inverse relationship between exponents and logarithms and use this relationship to solve problems involving logarithms and exponents.

MGSE9-12.A.SSE.3 Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.

MGSE9-12.F.IF.8b Use the properties of exponents to interpret expressions for exponential functions.

MGSE9-12.F.IF.8 Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal an explain different properties of the function.

Learning Target:

  • I will use the inverse relationship between exponents and logarithms to solve problems.

  • I will choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.

  • I will write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal and explain different properties of the function.

Success Criteria:

  • I can use the inverse relationship between exponents and logarithms to convert equations from logarithmic form to exponential form and vice versa.

  • I can evaluate logs containing perfect squares, cubes, square roots, cube roots, and other integer solutions.

  • I can use the change of base formula to rewrite a logarithm and calculate the log with a base other than 10 or e.

  • I can evaluate a common log with a calculator.

  • I can use the properties of logarithms to expand, condense, and simplify logarithms.

Differentiation/Summarizing/Check for Understanding

  • Scaffolding and small groups will be used for students who are struggling to clarify for understanding.

  • Shortened assignments for struggling students.

  • Teachers will visually and orally assess students throughout the class period and will frequently check for understanding.

  • Students who need extra help with work one on one or in a small group with the teacher.

  • Today’s Guided and Independent Practice will be checked together as a class for understanding, graded and students will have the opportunity to ‘fix’ missed problems.

  • Students have unlimited attempts at Weekly Assignments, Tests/Quizzes with the help of the teacher, giving more opportunity for understanding, exposure and success.

  • Students who are struggling with certain areas and are unable to understand or move on to the next area will be assigned individualized extra practice and lessons in IXL.
