ELAGSE9-10RL5: Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise

ELAGSE9-10RL7: Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums (e.g., Auden’s poem “Musée de Beaux Arts” and Breughel’s painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus), including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment.

Learning Target:

1. identify techniques used by filmmakers to introduce settings and characters 

2. recognize similarities among techniques used in films and novels

Success Criteria:

1. Participating in academic conversations

2. Creating written or oral responses to a prompt

Activities & Assignments

Latin Root

Opening prompt on expectations for film openings. WHat do they do? What do we expect? 

Vocab definitions of film terms. The instructor will present and review different film terms and students will supply examples of each from their own memories. Students will also keep track of these terms in their journals for use later in the lesson. 

The instructor will then show a few film openings! The class will discuss the way these films hook the viewer and establish their worlds.
