Teacher : Johnston,Hardman, Lipthratt, Hamilton
Course/ Subject: Biology
Date of Instruction: 8/22/23
Opening (I Do)
An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.
TKES 1, 2, 3,4,5, 8,10

SB6. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to assess the theory of evolution.
C. Construct an argument using valid and reliable sources to support the claim that evidence from comparative morphology (analogous vs. homologous structures), embryology, biochemistry (protein sequence) and genetics support the theory that all living organisms are related by way of common descent.
Learning Target:
We are learning the evidence that supports the theory that all living things are related by common descent

Success Criteria: I know I’ll have it when I can:
Describe what is meant by ‘common descent’ or ‘common ancestor’
Explore evidence for common descent through embryology, morphology, protein/DNA sequencing
Explain using evidence the difference between homologous, analogous and vestigial structures.
Introduction/Connection:

Discuss: video: Evolution 101
DIRECT INSTRUCTION:
Discussion on comparative morphology (continue brochure)
Video: Homologous vs Analogous structures
Instructions for Homologous/Analogous structures card sort
Notes embryology and biochemistry (dna)
Activity: Common Ancestry, It’s in our DNA
Activity: What are DNA and Genes?
Interactive Phylogenetic Tree
Guess the Embryo
Video: Evolution
Work Period (We Do, You Do)
Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations. Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.
TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. 8,10

GUIDED PRACTICE:
