Teacher : Johnston,Hardman, Lipthratt, Hamilton
Course/ Subject: Biology
Date of Instruction: 8/23/23
Opening (I Do)
An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.
TKES 1, 2, 3,4,5, 8,10

SB6. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to assess the theory of evolution.
b. Analyze and interpret data to explain patterns in biodiversity that result from speciation
d. Develop and use mathematical models to support explanations of how undirected genetic changes in natural selection and genetic drift have led to changes in populations of organisms.
Learning Target:

We are learning about how biodiversity is a result of speciation and ways this can occur.
Success Criteria: I know I’ll have it when I can:
Define biodiversity and species
Explain how new species can form through speciation
Analyze and interpret data to explain patterns of co-evolution that result from speciation.
Introduction/Connection:

Video: Why is biodiversity so important?
Video:The 5 fingers of evolution
DIRECT INSTRUCTION:

Video: Speciation (work sheet)
Explore: Same or Different species activity and reproductive barriers
Skittles-Speciation lab
Mini-Lesson: Guided Graphic organizer notes
Activity choices
Work Period (We Do, You Do)
Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations. Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.
