PP: Discovering voice
Teacher will begin with a fireside story time of an old mysterious haunting. Students will take notes on the story and discuss why it has been so persistent in american folklore.
The teacher will then introduce the poetic concept of a ballad. The class will follow as the form is explored and how it usually presents in poetry.
The instructor will then introduce several music videos of the classic folk ballad “In the Pines.” Students will compare and contrast the ballad with the story told by the instructor. They will also compare the two song versions against each other. What is revealed about the poem’s power as it has transformed?
The class will conclude with students attempting to write their own ballads for the poetry project.
