  • SC: I can explain the importance of Charlemagne. I can explain the manorial system in Europe. I can explain the feudal relationships of Western Europe. I can describe the impact of the Catholic Church in Europe.

Lesson/Activity: “Culture Shock: Crumbling Kingdom:” students will engage in a series of tasks that illustrate the connection between the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of feudalism. By participating in the mini-simulations, they will understand the necessity of feudalism and self-sufficiency following the collapse of the Roman Empire.

  • Apocalypse- 5 things you need for survival

  • Water (aqueducts breaking down– where are you going to go now?)

  • Food (pottage– which would you rather eat?)

  • Shelter– house of cards (demonstrates how it was nearly impossible to recreate the massive apartments and estates of the Roman Empire without the proper resources [building materials and know-how]. Thus, people have to live in smaller, needs-only housing)

  • Breakdown of literacy and government: work in pairs to follow 4 prompts to rebuild their society. Purpose of activity is to demonstrate decline in literacy and trade throughout Europe and how it led to the rise of feudalism.

Class discussion & exit ticket: How did these tasks represent the fall of the Roman Empire? How would you characterize Europe during this time period? How/why did people come together to survive?
