Activities & Assignments
PP: Finding Voice


The instructor will introduce the short story “The First Day.” We will begin with a short writing prompt inviting students to analyze the opening of the story. They will respond to prompts encouraging careful analysis of vocab and language use.

The class will then break into groups and search for all the instances of “this is my mother” in the text. Groups will analyze each instance and theorize its contribution to the story. Students will complete the handout and construct a compound sentence getting a picture of the mother as she appears in the story.
