Standard(s):

SAST1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to assess the validity of historical theories of astronomy. 

b. Obtain, evaluate and communicate information about how ancient structures, instruments, philosophies and civilizations influenced ancient astronomy. (Clarification statement: Philosophies include but are not limited to geocentric theory, Aristotelian physics, and the Ptolemaic model with epicycles.) 

c. Construct an argument based on evidence to support the scientific claims made by the heliocentric model. (Clarification statement: Include observational evidence from Galileo’s work, and the ideas of Copernicus, Kepler, and Newton.)

SAST3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to illustrate the formation of the solar system and the properties of celestial objects within it.

c. Ask questions to investigate and communicate major properties of our solar system bodies and the zones they inhabit. (Clarification statement: This includes planets, dwarf planets, major moons, asteroid belt, comets, Kuiper belt, and the Öort cloud.)

I can learn about how Ancient Cultures used the Moon, the Sun, the stars, and other celestial events in everyday life.

Instructional Strategies:

Opening (I do): PIRATE PREP - None today or tomorrow due to Presentations and Feast!!

We Do:

1. Those in the lab area for the Fall Festival part - set up the pumpkin cookies with the decorating items in bowls, prepare the drinks, get the paint ready for painting their hands and/or faces, get the Solar System walk ready, and prepare the "Fishing Activity" for them with the spooky rods and the Jack-o-lantern gifts and masks.
2. Those in class area - put on the tablecloths, put the donated OneBlood shirts in the giftbags, cut the clay, sort the candies, Moon pies, and other items, and get the coloring supplies ready for the Moon-related Halloween pictures.
3. Two people go to the door to welcome them and blow bubbles for their entries.
4. Clean up when they leave!

You Do:

1. Place bookbags near the front of the room below the Promethean Board.
2. Get ready for our guests.
3. Get crayons ready for the coloring portion.
4. Get the clay ready for the rocket, moon, and star shapes.
5. Get the giftbags ready for the each student.

Closing (We Check): 

1. New Flocabulary on "Space Exploration" is due on Monday, November 4th.
2. Keep your notebook organized.
3. Work on any missing work or incomplete assignments.

Differentiation Strategies:

Group work - Welcoming ALL of Mr. Parker's ACCESS students for our Astronomy-inspired Fall Festival. Set-up for everyone to visit. Clean up after they leave.
