a. Construct an argument based on evidence of the significance of historical and future space exploration as they relate to leaps in technology, cultural cooperation, knowledge, and inspiration. (Clarification statement: Historical space exploration begins with Sputnik and continues to the present day, including possible future extrasolar exploration, space stations, and colonization.)

SAST1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to assess the validity of historical theories of astronomy. 

e. Construct an explanation for how technological advances in the design of reflecting and refracting telescopes have improved our ability to study the universe.  (Clarification statement: The focus is on the historical use of optical telescopes utilizing only the visible light spectrum.)

Learning Target:

I can learn more about the Space Exploration Program and the Space Race.

I can learn about reflecting and refracting telescopes.

I can learn about the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Observatory.

Success Criteria:

I can learn about the Space Race from the 1960s to present day.

I can learn about how the telescope was developed and how it has evolved over the centuries.

I can learn about the importance of the Hubble Space Telescope and other advancements in space telescopes to help us better understand the Universe.

Opening (I do): PIRATE PREP - SAT Math Question of the Day!

We Do:

  1. Thursday - Finish notes on the International Space Station. Watch a video showing how it was put into place over a 10 year period. Start webquest on Telescopes.
  2. Friday - Finish the webquest using the Chromebooks. Work on Flocabulary on "Space Exploration" due on Monday.

You Do:

  1. Thursday - Start the webquest on the Hubble Space Telescope and the innovations and information it brought to us about Space, types of telescopes, and the James Webb Observatory.
  2. Friday - Finish the Venn diagram comparing and contrasting reflecting telescopes with refracting telescopes and your Timeline on Telescopes.

Closing (We Check): 

  1. Flocabulary #11 on "Space Exploration" is due Monday night by 11:59 p.m.
  2. Keep your notebook organized.
  3. Work on any missing work or incomplete assignments.

Differentiation Strategies:

Individual work - work on Telescope Webquest (HST, refracting vs. reflecting, The James Webb Observatory, etc.)
