Standard(s):

SAST5. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the connections between mass, gravity and fusion with respect to the life cycle of stars.

a. Develop and use models to explain the process of stellar evolution from star birth to star death, including binary systems.

b. Construct an argument based on evidence from the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram to assess the properties of stars, including density, luminosity, temperature, rates of fusion, and spectral class.

c. Ask questions to evaluate evidence that predicts the lifespan and final stage of stellar evolution based on mass. (Clarification statement: Include stellar remnants and events such as neutron stars, pulsars, black holes, supernovae.)

d. Construct an argument based on evidence that explores the connections among various cosmic phenomena and leading theories.

Learning Target:

I can learn more about the life cycle of stars, Hertzsprung-Russell Diagrams, and the classification of stars.

Success Criteria:

I can learn about stellar evolution, charts and diagrams, luminosity, and stellar terms.

Instructional Strategies:

Gradual Release Model of Instruction:  I Do, We Do, You Do, We Check

Opening (I do): PIRATE PREP - SAT Math Question of the Day!

We Do:

  1. Friday - Sub Day: Take notes on "Life Cycle of Stars" on specific slides.
  2. Monday - No School due to Veterans Day!
  3. Tuesday - Continue notes on stellar evolution.

You Do:

  1. Friday - Sub Day: Start Constellations Webquest (first 28 questions). This will count as a project grade when all 80 questions have been completed, and all drawings have been done.

Closing (We Check):

  1. Flocabulary #12 on "Environmental Change" due TONIGHT by 11:59 p.m.
  2. Keep your notebook organized.
  3. Work on any missing work or incomplete assignments.

Differentiation Strategies:

Individual work - take notes on PowerPoint with the sub and then work on Flocabulary and webquest on constellations.

Formative/Summative

Assessment(s):

(We Check)

Teacher check while in partners/group work

Address individual questions/concerns
