ELAGSE9-10RL1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

(Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above.) ELAGSE9-10W5: Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience. Learning Target:
Establish the value of early chapters in a novel to make educated guesses about how the plot will develop through characterization.
Empathize with character experience through writing.
Success Criteria:
Create written responses to prompts
Create a list of predictions on the course the novel will take.
Analyze pre-made legal cases using “casting of lots” to determine guilt or non-guilt like in the novel.
Activities & Assignments
PP: Discovering Voice
Class will begin with an overall review of the chapters 2-5. What exactly happened in this book so far? The instructor will introduce a few key paragraphs for students to annotate. Is the gold merely gold? What is Silas truly in love with? Is Whirlwind merely a horse? Are they symbols for something.
The class will then Write a detailed paragraph about the most valuable things in their lives. They will describe the items physically, turning them about in their hands and appealing to as many senses as possible just like Silas obsession over his gold.
Sharing time will commence. The instructor will also participate with his own writing. We will then write briefly about what we would most like to STEAL. We will plan out our heist. The class will pick two winners of the read arounds for candy.
Class will close with independent poetry project time.
