Learning Target:
Annotate poetic texts and make a guess to their overall meaning.
Engage similar poetic devices in the writing students own poetry.
Success Criteria:
Students will create annotated texts with detailed notes regarding their impressions of poetry.
Students will write their own poems mimicking the prophetic and boisterous styles of Yeats and Stevens.


Activities & Assignments

Class will begin with a dramatic reading of poems by William Butler Yeats and Wallace Stevens. The instructor will once again model the idea of word assosication as explored during our work with “the fight.” Students will create annotated texts during the read around and share their notes after the initial reading.

The instructor will catalog the notes looking for examples of key symbols and images in hopes the class will notice pivotal words and phrases. The instructor will list the symbols and the class will explore their meaning together. Using these definitions the class will form a better approach to understanding the goals of the poem and its narrative significance.

After the lengthy discussion, students will be asked to create a long list of MODERN symbols for the direction of our world at this time. These symbols will be listed on the board. The class will work together to create several “Yeats and Stevens” likes poems. We will call these “prophetic poems.” Students will be allowed to create their own based upon the word bank for inclusion in the poetry project.

Class will end with poetry project checks and independent time.
