ELAGSE9-10RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text,
including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific
word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and
place; how it sets a formal or informal tone.)




Learning Target:
Read closely and analyze song lyrics and a public performance of them.
Explain how word choice reveals tone
Success Criteria:

Activities & Assignments
PP: FFW

Students will be asked to return to the opening thought questions from the previous day. A handout will be provided with sample frame sentences inviting students to share and record their thoughts in small groups or partners.

We will then conduct an analysis of the blending of formal language with slang. What would happen if the song were written entirely in slang?

We will end with independent time to work on poetry projects.
