Activities & Assignments
PP: Discovering voice

The class will begin with an introduction to the word “abridged.” Examples of abridged texts will be provided and the instructor will work to explain their presence in literature. The class will have a pre-viewing debate on these texts and whether they are helpful in exposing children to literature or harmful.

The class will then view an episode of the PBS series Wishbone with a heavily abridged version of Silas Marner. Students will be encouraged to take notes on what has been included in this version and what is missing. When the film concludes the instructor will assign a writing task for students to express their reaction to the film. What choices did the film makers utilize that worked? What didn’t? Is the film a success or a failure in your eyes? Why? Class will end with a ticket out the door regarding film and literature.
