Standard(s):

SAST1a. Ask questions to investigate the daily/seasonal motions of the sky and communicate the significance of constellations, for navigation and time-keeping. (Compare and contrast astronomy and astrology and describe how the zodiac relates to the motions of solar system objects.)

SAST3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to illustrate the formation of the solar system and the properties of celestial objects within it.

c. Ask questions to investigate and communicate major properties of our solar system bodies and the zones they inhabit. (Clarification statement: This includes planets, dwarf planets, major moons, asteroid belt, comets, Kuiper belt, and the Öort cloud.)

Learning Target:

I can learn more about the Planet Earth to compare it with other planets in the Solar System and being discovered every year.

Success Criteria:

I can learn about some characteristics and features of Earth to compare and contrast with the other planets in our Solar System and that are being discovered on a regular basis.

I can learn about the outer core and its role in creating the magnetic field for Planet Earth.

Instructional Strategies:

Opening (I do): PIRATE PREP - ACT Math Question of the Day!

We Do:

1. Take notes on Earth - facts, rotation, revolution, precession, magnetic dynamo, magnetic field, etc. 
2. Get Chromebook to start Flocabulary #2: "Earth's History."

You Do:

1. Work on any missing or incomplete assignments thus far: Latitude/Longitude worksheets, notes, coloring the layers of the Earth, word search, crossword puzzle, mass vs. weight math calculations, Vocabulary list #1, etc. (Today is the LAST day to get caught up!! All other missing work will be done as homework or go in the gradebook as zeros.)

Closing (We Check): 

1. Keep your notebook organized.

Differentiation Strategies:

Individual work on notes, Flocabulary, and vocabulary.

Independent and/or partner work to complete any missing word search, crossword puzzle, mass vs. weight math sheet, and/or Latitude/Longitude worksheets.

Assignment(s):

1.  Flocabulary #2 on "Earth's History" is due on Wednesday, August 21st by 11:59 p.m.

2.  Flocabulary #3 on "Earth's Layers and Plate Tectonics" is due on Wednesday, August 28th by 11:59 p.m.

3.   Planet Projects are due on Thursday, September 5th and Friday, September 6th in class. Presentations are done in class and visuals (models, brochures, tri-fold boards, etc. are brought in with the presentations. Papers are uploaded along with the PowerPoints to Google Classroom folders.)
