Standard(s):

SAST1a. Ask questions to investigate the daily/seasonal motions of the sky and communicate the significance of constellations, for navigation and time-keeping. (Compare and contrast astronomy and astrology and describe how the zodiac relates to the motions of solar system objects.)

SAST3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to illustrate the formation of the solar system and the properties of celestial objects within it.

c. Ask questions to investigate and communicate major properties of our solar system bodies and the zones they inhabit. (Clarification statement: This includes planets, dwarf planets, major moons, asteroid belt, comets, Kuiper belt, and the Öort cloud.)

Learning Target:

I can learn more about the Planet Earth to compare it with other planets in the Solar System and being discovered every year.

Success Criteria:

I can learn about some characteristics and features of Earth to compare and contrast with the other planets in our Solar System and that are being discovered on a regular basis.

I can learn about how the outer core creates the magnetic field on the Planet Earth.

  1. Finish up posters on The Core's "Good Science vs. Bad Science."

You Do:

  1. Presentations of the good and bad science from the movie, which is illustrating the Science Fiction books and movies have some truth and some lies in them!

Closing (We Check): 

  1. Keep your notebook organized.
  2. Flocabulary #3 due next Wednesday, August 28th by 11:59 p.m.

Differentiation Strategies:

Group work - Finish "Good Science vs. Bad Science" poster project.

Group work - Present posters and information to their classmates. Put up posters in the hallway for display.

Individual work - Vocabulary List #2 and Flocabulary #3.

2. "Good Science vs. Bad Science" from The Core movie. Poster presentations in class on Friday, August 23rd.

3.   Planet Projects are due on Thursday, September 5th and Friday, September 6th in class. Presentations are done in class and visuals (models, brochures, tri-fold boards, etc. are brought in with the presentations. Papers are uploaded along with the PowerPoints to Google Classroom folders.)
