  • SCSh1: Students will evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science.

  • SCSh2: Students will use standard Safety Practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations.

LT:

  • We are learning about the fundamental principles of chemistry.

  • We are learning about safety procedures in a laboratory setting.

SC:

  • I can describe the major attributes/characteristics of chemistry.

  • I can identify how chemistry differs and is similar to other sciences.

  • I can determine safety procedures for laboratory investigations.

  • I can determine a response if a safety procedure is violated.

Lesson/Activity:

  • Welcome to class and where supplies are located in the room

  • Get assigned Chromebook (see list for correct number) and start/complete “Flocabulary #1: The Scientific Method.”

  • Syllabus & class procedures (handouts)

  • Multiple Intelligence Surveys and Emergency Contact information sheet (HW - bring back Friday)

Resources:

  • Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston

Friday

Standard(s):

  • SCSh2: Students will use standard Safety Practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations.

  • SCSh3: Students will identify and investigate problems scientifically.

  • SCSh4: Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating scientific equipment and materials.

LT:

  • We are learning about safety procedures in a laboratory setting.

  • We are learning how to investigate problems like a scientist.

  • We are learning to analyze and interpret data to develop reasonable scientific explanations.

  • We are learning to communicate results from scientific investigations and information.

SC:

  • I can determine safety procedures for laboratory investigations.

  • I can determine a response if a safety procedure is violated.

  • I can identify the problem using observation techniques (five senses).

  • I can make an inference from my observations.

  • I can use my inferences to form a hypothesis.

  • I can design a single-variable controlled experiment to test my hypothesis.

  • I can determine tools and equipment to test my hypothesis.

  • I can test my hypothesis.

Lesson/Activity:

  • Turn in Multiple Intelligence Survey and contact information from yesterday’s class

  • Chem Chat - formative pre-assessment of prior knowledge and introduction activity (in lab area in pairs or trios)

  • Lab Safety Packet given out - quiz on Friday, August 16th (start studying)

  • HW: Get your 5-subject spiral-bound notebooks over this weekend; “Find the mistakes in the lab” document

Resources:

  • Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston
