Honors/Gifted Chemistry

Monday

Standard(s):

  • SCSh1: Students will evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science.

  • SCSh2: Students will use standard Safety Practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations.

LT:

  • We are learning about the fundamental principles of chemistry.

  • We are learning about safety procedures in a laboratory setting.

SC:

  • I can describe the major attributes/characteristics of chemistry.

  • I can identify how chemistry differs and is similar to other sciences.

  • I can determine safety procedures for laboratory investigations.

  • I can determine a response if a safety procedure is violated.

Lesson/Activity:

  • Set-up the new Notebooks. Pass out new handouts and glue or staple in the other handouts from last week.

  • Work on “Units of Measurement” worksheet with a partner.

  • Read Units of Measurement notes sheet and highlight the seven base units and Prefixes “Tera down to Pico”

  • HW - R.A. #1 due tomorrow; Lab Safety Quiz is moved to Thursday (Study for it!) and Elements Quiz #1 is on Friday, January 17th.

Resources:

  • Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston

  • Worksheets, glue sticks, scissors, markers, and staplers

Tuesday

Standard(s):

Lesson/Activity:

  • Finish ChemChat - formative pre-assessment of prior knowledge and introduction activity (in lab area in pairs or trios)

  • Measurement worksheet (English vs. Metric)

  • Rest of Lab Safety Packet (16 Chemical Symbols to know and types of lab equipment)

  • Check R.A. #1 (get blue stamp)

  • Take notes on Measurement (Google Classroom - write only on RIGHT pages)

  • HW: Lab Safety Quiz is moved to Thursday (Study for it!) and Elements Quiz #1 is on Friday, January 17th. Flocabulary #2: “Physical and Chemical Changes” opened today and closes on Tuesday, January 21st at 11:59 p.m. (you can get it done early)

Resources:

  • Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston

  • Worksheets - ChemChat, more Lab Safety information (packets), GSE Standards sheets, and “Emglish vs. Metric” sheet or Accuracy vs. Precision sheets
