High School Weekly Lesson Plan Week of: Jan 13, 2025 *for additional curriculum information, please visit the district's resource High School Resource Guides or Georgia Standards of Excellence Honors/Gifted Chemistry Monday Standard(s): SCSh1: Students will evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science. SCSh2: Students will use standard Safety Practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations. LT: We are learning about the fundamental principles of chemistry. We are learning about safety procedures in a laboratory setting. SC: I can describe the major attributes/characteristics of chemistry. I can identify how chemistry differs and is similar to other sciences. I can determine safety procedures for laboratory investigations. I can determine a response if a safety procedure is violated. Lesson/Activity: Set-up the new Notebooks. Pass out new handouts and glue or staple in the other handouts from last week. Work on “Units of Measurement” worksheet with a partner. Read Units of Measurement notes sheet and highlight the seven base units and Prefixes “Tera down to Pico” HW - R.A. #1 due tomorrow; Lab Safety Quiz is moved to Thursday (Study for it!) and Elements Quiz #1 is on Friday, January 17th. Resources: Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Worksheets, glue sticks, scissors, markers, and staplers Tuesday Standard(s): SCSh1: Students will evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science. SCSh2: Students will use standard Safety Practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations. LT: We are learning about the fundamental principles of chemistry. Lesson/Activity: Finish ChemChat - formative pre-assessment of prior knowledge and introduction activity (in lab area in pairs or trios) Measurement worksheet (English vs. Metric) Rest of Lab Safety Packet (16 Chemical Symbols to know and types of lab equipment) Check R.A. #1 (get blue stamp) Take notes on Measurement (Google Classroom - write only on RIGHT pages) HW: Lab Safety Quiz is moved to Thursday (Study for it!) and Elements Quiz #1 is on Friday, January 17th. Flocabulary #2: “Physical and Chemical Changes” opened today and closes on Tuesday, January 21st at 11:59 p.m. (you can get it done early) Resources: Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Worksheets - ChemChat, more Lab Safety information (packets), GSE Standards sheets, and “Emglish vs. Metric” sheet or Accuracy vs. Precision sheets Wednesday Standard(s): SCSh1: Students will evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science. I can use NFPA, MSDS, and chemical symbols to assess the safety information for different chemicals. Lesson/Activity: NFPA Diamond/MSDS work (use Chromebooks and cell phones to figure out the colored numbers for various chemicals and connect them to MSDS reports. (group work) Teacher Demo of lab equipment HW - Lab Safety Quiz is tomorrow (you need an 80% or higher to avoid the retake); Elements Quiz #1 is Friday, January 17th; R.A. #2 is due on Tuesday, January 21st; Flocabulary #2 is due on Tuesday, January 21st by 11:59 p.m. Resources: Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Worksheets - NFPA Diamond worksheets (lab section) Chromebooks and cell phones Thursday Standard(s): SCSh2: Students will use standard Safety Practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations. SCSh3: Students will identify and investigate problems scientifically. SCSh4: Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating scientific equipment and materials. LT: We are learning about safety procedures in a laboratory setting. We are learning how to investigate problems like a scientist. We are learning to analyze and interpret data to develop reasonable scientific explanations. We are learning to communicate results from scientific investigations and information. SC: I can determine safety procedures for laboratory investigations. I can determine a response if a safety procedure is violated. I can use NFPA, MSDS, and chemical symbols to assess the safety information for different chemicals. Lesson/Activity: Take Lab Safety Quiz. Continue after the quiz NFPA Diamond/MSDS work (use Chromebooks and cell phones to figure out the colored numbers for various chemicals and connect them to MSDS reports. (group work) HW: Elements Quiz #1 is tomorrow over the assigned 20 elements; R.A. #2 is due on Tuesday, January 21st; Flocabulary #2 is due on Tuesday, January 21st by 11:59 p.m. Resources: Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Lab Safety Quiz Worksheets - NFPA Diamond worksheets (lab section) Chromebooks and cell phones Friday Standard(s): SCSh5: Students will demonstrate the computation and estimation skills necessary for analyzing data and developing reasonable scientific explanations. SCSh6: Students will clearly communicate scientific investigations and information. LT: We are learning to analyze and interpret data to develop reasonable scientific explanations. We are learning to communicate results from scientific investigations and information. SC: I can identify different types of data (quantitative and qualitative). I can identify different types of graphs. I can determine an appropriate graph to represent my data. I can identify the independent and dependent variable on a graph. I can determine the correlation between two variables. I can explain the correlation between two variables. I can support my scientific findings (hypothesis) with data. I can support or reject my hypothesis using evidence and reasoning. Lesson/Activity: Study and take Elements Quiz #1. Pirate Prep #1: Inferences worksheet (two-sided - work independently) Variables and understanding the scientific method worksheet (work in groups) HW: Enjoy your long weekend! You have TWO things due on Tuesday: R.A. #2 and Flocabulary #2. Resources: Modern Chemistry by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Elements Quiz #1 Worksheets - Inferences sheet, variables and scientific method
