Classroom Expectations/Syllabus

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS

 

The following classroom behavior is expected:

1. OBEY ALL SCHOOL RULES.

In this classroom all school rules and policies will be followed. You are responsible for being familiar with these.

(Phones will be placed in the students bookbag during instruction unless being used for educational purposes, No throwing or shooting into the trashcan)

 

2. BE PRESENT.

Attendance is important. Be on time and ready to work when bell rings. Excessive absences make passing difficult. If you are absent, you are responsible for making up all work missed.

You are expected to remain in class once you have arrived. You need to use the restroom before entering the classroom.

An absence is not an excuse for a project or paper being turned in late.

 

3 BRING ALL NEEDED MATERIALS TO CLASS.

Always be prepared with the required materials: your folder with paper, pens and pencils, your reader's-writer's log, and book.  Reader's Writer's Log, Folder, and Book will be given to you the first day of class.

 

4. BE IN YOUR SEAT AND READY TO WORK WHEN THE BELL RINGS.

The school tardy policy will be enforced. Tardies are recorded on Infinite Campus daily.

 

5. SHOW RESPECT TO ALL PEOPLE.

Unless I tell you otherwise, you will be expected to raise your hand to speak and to speak when you are called on. Always listen and stay seated when others in the class have permission to speak. If you disrupt class, you should expect the following consequences:

1. First offense-- Name recorded. Warning.

2. Second offense-- One check. Teacher conference with student (after school on Monday 3:30 - 3:45). If you do not attend the conference, your parent will be called. Possible isolation from class. Detention with teacher during lunch or After school. 

3. Third offense-- Two checks. Phone call to parent.

4. Fourth offense-- Three checks. A face-to-face teacher-parent conference may be arranged.

 

** Names and checks erased each Friday afternoon. **

 

Read 180

CLASS MATERIALS

 

1. Personal Hand Sanitizer, pencil sharpener, mask, and kleenex.

 

2. PENCILS AND PENS

If you don't write, you don't pass! You need to bring #2 pencils with erasers and blue or black ink pens every day. Parents will be notified about students who come unprepared.

 

3. FOLDER (will be provided) Every student will be issued a book that they are expected to keep in their bookbag with their folder and bring to class daily!

 

EVALUATION

A student's grade is based on achievement of the course objectives and mastery of material covered in the course.

GRADING

Daily Group Instruction and Classwork (20% of the course grade)

“Good-Faith Participation”* as well as assessments of what is to be learned during whole group instruction time and small group instruction time.

 

Independent Reading and Writing/Projects (30% of the course grade)

“Good-Faith Participation”* as well as assessments of what is to be learned during independent reading time. Writing about what you read will be important.

 

Software and Tests/Quizzes (30% of course grade):

“Good-Faith Participation”* as well as assessments of what is to be learned during software time. Using time wisely and completing software segments will be crucial.

 

Final Exam will count as 20% of the student's course grade.

*The following behaviors could affect your participation --

Being inattentive (sleeping or appearing to sleep, off-task chatting, etc.).

Being disruptive (throwing objects, horseplay, being out of seat unnecessarily, etc.).

Being disrespectful (to the teacher, to another student, or to anyone else in the room).

 Course Description:

READ 180 is an intensive reading intervention program that meets the needs of struggling readers. This program directly addresses the individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. The READ 180 software includes videos, mostly about science and social studies topics, and students read about the video content and engage in comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and word-study activities around this content.  In addition, audiobooks model comprehension, vocabulary, and self-monitoring strategies used by good readers, and students read leveled paperbacks in many genres.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Increase reading fluency by reading fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry.
  2. Use to increase fluency and comprehension.
  3. Increase reading comprehension with reading strategies.
  4. Write to explain, to express, and to persuade while keeping purpose and audience in mind.
